Draw Something Daily Active Users

A recent statistic indicated that in the month of April, nearly 5M daily active users (DAUs) lost interest in the game and dropped it - this brought the total number of players from 15M down to 10M, this drop in players is alarming to say the least!

Advertising plan for Draw Something is already implemented, companies who buy advertising from Draw Something will have their brand name featured in the game, and brands like 'Doritos', 'Pepsi' and 'The Avengers' have already invested some advertising money into the game. This move is a consequence of the small number of digital items that can be sold in the game, unlike, Farmville, Mafia Wars, Draw Something can only make you buy colors and bombs, which is not much of a video game inventory to be honest.

What Zynga did wrong would be the fact that they didn't consider whether Draw Something had staying power, whether it had the potential to spawn many different spin offs and extend its brand beyond the game into a lifestyle brand like Angry Birds. The game quicly got repititive and confusing, and it took too much effort to play and soon it was no longer fun to play the game.

But there are several people that profitted handsomely from this, they would be the people who sold the compnay at the best moment when it was at it's peak, just before it's downward spiral and decline.

Draw Something Players Dwindling after Losing 5M Players

It's only been about a month after Zynga purchased OMGPOP and their hit game Draw Something, and already there's some trouble brewing. It's not certain yet but we might be in seeing the start of what might serve as a painful lesson to businesses and companies out there - that it might not always be the best idea to buy your competition shortly after they've experienced a great amount of success because that success may be short lived and you're uncertain of the long term sustainability of it.

It is well known that Zynga tries to buy out every company that's ever had their game made it to the top of the mobile gaming charts, if they fail to do that, Zynga will make a clone of the game. Zynga's most recent purchase of OMGPOP after their game exploded into popularity seemed like a good bet. A 200 million dollar bet to be exact.

Although it's not confirmed, but Zynga appeared to have bought a company's whose game was just a passing fad - in that they're only popular for a short span of time because of their novelty, but the players are quick to lose interest and they move onto something new really quickly. It's always better to assess a company based on a string of proven titles instead of one speicific success, otherwise you might be setting youself up for disaster!
